What is a medical alarm?

A medical alarm, also referred to as a personal alarm, a medical alert or a personal emergency response system, is an alarm system designed for helping people who need specialized help and urgent attention.

A medical alarm is meant to draw attention to any situation that requires an intervention from emergency medical personnel. Many people suffering from specific conditions could find medical alarms very useful because with a simple push of the panic button the help is on the way. In addition, a medical alarm can make life easier for the sick persons and especially for the elder living alone, because they can count on someone to help them in their bad moments.

The typical medical alarm systems have a wireless pendant or transmitter that is activated in cases of emergency. But the medical alerts can take the shape of a necklace, bracelet, watch or other kind of device easy to have around. But no matter the shape, since the first medical alarms, conceived in Germany in the early 1970s, the medical alarm system has an emergency transmitter and a base station, usually connected to the telephone, with a very sensitive microphone/speaker unit. When the alarm is activated, the monitoring central station contacts the medical personnel that is dispatched to the site where the suffering persons need help.

Many medical alarms are now available with a set of accessories like fall sensors, smoke detectors or motion ones. And some monitoring centers use the "passive alarm" or "safety clock"; the user has to push a button of the base station several times a day, confirming that he/she is well. If the confirmation doesn’t come for a longer period, around 12 hours, someone is send or a telephone call is made to check if everything is all right.
